Content Knowledge

Importance of Content Knowledge

InTASC standard four, Content Knowledge, was established to monitor how well teachers understand and deliver subject-focused material. Teachers are responsible for becoming experts in their professional field of study. Successful elementary educators demonstrate broad and deep knowledge of central concepts taught in PK-6 classrooms. These exemplary teachers also illustrate the utilization of inquiry-based pedagogical methods to sustain an up-to-date understanding of the structures within domain-specific content. Adherence to InTASC standard four cultivates rich learning opportunities for students. They are immersed in meaningful experiences which generate the skills and knowledge needed to be successful. Teachers who design content-focused lesson plans, conduct data-driven guided reading lessons, and provide multi-solution problem-solving opportunities expand students’ connections with and understanding of content.

Artifact #1: Content-focused Lesson Plans

This artifact demonstrates my ability to design. Here, I am showcasing my content knowledge by providing direct teaching and modeling of a particular subject. My advanced subject knowledge helps me to cultivate opportunities to guide my students in practicing content-specific skills. Adherence to InTASC standard four also supports my ability to generate relatable, meaningful student application of content and skills. I can help my students see how the subject is related to contexts outside of the classroom. As I follow guidelines for InTASC standard four, I am continuously building upon my ability to help students receive all of the information and support that they need to perform well on tests and, more importantly, in applying content in a meaningful way throughout their everyday lives.

Artifact #2: Guided Reading Practice

Click on the picture or the bolded words to watch a short video of myself working with a small group of students.

This artifact demonstrates my ability to deliver developmentally appropriate guided reading practice that addresses the content-specific domains of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Effective reading teachers teach skills, strategies, and concepts. A teacher’s understanding of the continuum of literacy development is an example of critical content-specific knowledge. Adherence to InTASC standard four is essential to meet the needs of students who are performing at various reading levels. My content knowledge supports my ability to reach each student through appropriate assessments, diagnostic procedures, and the implementation of explicit, systematic reading instruction.

Artifact #3: Multi-solution problem

This artifact demonstrates my multifaceted knowledge of content and how I use that understanding to cultivate critical thinking opportunities for my students. My genuine understandingof a subject allows me to help the learners in my classroom examine content from various perspectives. Adherence to InTASC standard four is exhibited through my pedagogical methods and varied instructional approaches. My students gain valuable experiences in problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and creative ways to examine new content because of my robust understanding and delivery of subject-focused material.
